The Great Hunt!

Here is a fun game that can be played  many times and still be lots of fun!

Collect at least

• 42 ACORNS, pebbles or any other treasure you would like to use. 
• Acrylic paints (non toxic) in 6 colors
• Paint brushes

paint your "Treasure" as follows (or colors of your choice)
(2) gold..............................10 points
(4) red...............................8 points
(6) green...........................6 points
(8) purple..........................4 points
(10) blue..........................2 points
(12) white ........................1 point

Each color has a different point value .
One person hides all the treasures in the yard (or house). then the HUNT is on.
Whoever collects  the most points is announced the" Treasure Hunt Extraordinaire"
Let the games begin!

ASL word of the day...Nuts

My grand kids are either sick or have misplaced their cameras, so I don't have a model today.
But here is the ASL word of the day: NUT (peanut)
 the sign reminds me of someone trying to suck their thumb with their mouth open. 
This picture is of kayleigh who is a thumb sucker. It's as close as I am going to get today.

Peanut n.  A pod with oily, edible seeds: Don't leave the shells around when you eat peanuts.
This same sign is used for NUT.

(Represents peanut butter sticking to the back of one's teeth) Flick the extended right thumb, palm facing left, forward off the edge of the top front teeth with an upward double movement.

plop and drop fall arrangement

As we wake to the chill of Autumn's embrace,
Changes in nature start to take place,
Birds fly through the air
in perfect V-form,
and head for the south
where the sun shines and warms

Quick and easy table decoration.
Plop and drop arrangement!
Gather some acorns and fall leaves.
(or buy them)
Drop into a glass vase or bowl.
Now you have a beautiful arrangement.

Quick and easy. 
I took an antique hand painted plate from my grandmother, added  the vase with acorn salt and pepper shakers.

Bear Tales-Acorns

Oh, when the ripe acorns,

so smooth and so brown

get loose from their cups

and come pattering down

What work is in store

For the girls and the boys

First of all to collect them

And then to make toys

For they can make thimbles

and tiny doll cradles

Ane thorn-handles saucepans

and egg-cups and ladles,

Extinguishers, flower-pots,

Baskets and rings,

And barrels and buckets,

and all kind of things.

They can stock a whole shop

if they have any brains,

and use a small penknife 

and plenty of pains.

Spiced Nuts

 Seasoned with Love
I love warm nuts in spices, but of course you can eat them cold. Here is a recipe for making your own spiced nuts.

1/4 cup butter
4 cups nuts ( almonds, cashews, peacans or whatever is your favorite)
2 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon nutmeg

In a skillet melt butter and then add your nuts.
Cook over low heat for 20 minutes
Drain onto paper towels.
While your nuts are cooking mix remaining ingredients in a plastic container with lid
Add warm nuts to mixture, replace lid and SHAKE!
Spread on a baking sheet or foil to cool.
Store in an airtight container.

If you want to give as a gift...Decorate an old jar with fabric, paper, raffia, embellishment or whatever your heart desites. Fill with the nuts, and then add a fabric circle to the lid, tie a ribbon/raffia around fabric and you have a nice gift.
Take along with you to Thanksgiving dinner as a thank you or these make a nice neighbor gift for the holidays. .

V olcano in a bottle

 Hawaii has the worlds largest Volcano, the Mauna Loa. The lava from this volcano covers more than 2,000 square miles of Hawaii's big island. Chris is one of those lucky kids who gets to spend his summers with his grandma in Hawaii.Now Chris will demonstrate this fun kitchen experiment.  This is a great  way to show kids how a volcano erupts.

Materials Needed:
Small plastic water bottle
Warm Water
Red food coloring
1/4 cup vinegar
Heaping teaspoon baking soda

Fill the water bottle 3/4 way full with warm water
Add a few drops of red food coloring
Add the vinegar

Now using a funnel held just above the top of bottle, Quickly add the baking soda. The mixture will instantly fizz and overflow from the bottle.

Talk with your child that vinegar and baking soda together produce carbon dioxide. The very gas that makes hot liquid rock beneath the earth's surface erupt from volcano's such as the one in Hawaii.

Remember to cover the work space as this is a messy experiment.
